I'm flagging myself to victory!

I surrender, therefor I win. This is how the game plays out right now. When you're in a good position, but do not want to risk losing a 2nd place, you'll flag for 2nd. If you are 3rd, you will do the same for fear of losing 3rd palce, and so forth until everyone flags or the state of the game changes. In which case, someone might refuse to flag, change the state of the game and we'll see lots of flags disappear and war resumes.

Something else that will happen is a ninja flagging attack. You gain a territory just before flagging, gaining a rank or 2 in the process.

All these strategies take away a lot of the fun factor of this game, which is basically war. Most of the top tables will not see built up war (where all territories are stacked up to 8 dice). The games rather consist on stacking up to 8 dice and flagging, hoping for the best possible position.

---

I believe, like many others, that there should be changes to the flagging option.

1. Once you flag, you do not gain new dice.
2. Once you flag, you cannot attack ANYONE.
3. Once you flag, you cannot "unflag".
4. If you are attacked, you are automatically "unflaged" and may resume play OR flag again.

When one surrenders, why would be still be able to wage war and keep military production? It makes no sense.

I've really been confused by the more recent trend to expect flags to be "respected". I've seen some very veteran players turn flags on when they become weak and turn them off again when they are strong, expecting mercy in the meantime and getting rather up tight if it isn't given.

It hadn't occurred to me at all to "respect" a flag, or to have my own respected. The flag was simply a signal, to me, that I was ready to accept the current state of the game as the end state.

It was a scant four months ago when, as I recall, a fierce debate taking place on the forums with regards to the very "war" that Kehm is referring to the lack of; people were complaining that everyone "turtles and battles": that is, stacks their dice up until everyone has 8-stacks and then commences battling one another. The complaint, at the time, was that this makes the game one of pure chance, rather than one of strategy.

Now Kehm is mad that NOT doing this (have this so-called war) "take[s] away a lot of the fun factor of this game". I don't really have any comment on the ideas he presents, but I do find this turn of events rather ironic.

I think this is proof positive that you can't please everybody all the time...
