SCORING SYSTEM...please read

i recently clicked on the "top players" and seen the the formula to work out the score is
"1/rank_from_rating"

i input my details in to this formula assuming it should read "1 diveded by (rating-rank)"

mine read...

1 divided by (1582-1393) = 0.005291

now i clicked on the top player at this point in time which was "grunvagr"

his formula read

1 divided by (1912-1) = 0.0005232

Now, the result in my answer to the formula is greater than grunvagr...

i would like someone to elaborate this confusion i obviously hold about how the scoring works...

also, please do confuse me asking me to read wiki, would massively appreciate it if someone simplified things....

any useful feed back muchly appreciated

rating-rank is not a formula... that doesn't mean rating MINUS rank

what it means is this, what is your elo?

1582

mine was 1912

now look in your profile what the parenthesis tells you next to 1582

it says 1582 elo (2390th)

mine was 1912 (89th)

rating-rank means compared to others, what is your elo. Compared to others I have the 89th best elo right now. Compared to others you have the 2390th best elo.

You didnt think the formula would honestly reward more rank gain to someone with a 1500 elo than someone on the higher tables? seems a bit silly.

Here's a quick summary that makes everything make sense.

Click on the NEWS link (top left)

whoever those 'top 5' in the news are, those are the people in position to add to their rank. Formula goes like this.

If the #1 elo plays a game and ends with the highest elo (currently 2110, riser)

then it doesnt really matter what their elo is, but it does matter how they compare to others (that parenthesis by elo in your profile)

is it the BEST elo? the 2nd best?

If riser plays a game and keeps the highest elo compared to others the formula is

1 game divided by 1st place elo

1/1 = 1

1 point, added to rank (0.00) that value you see on the top 25 players page

If riser drops to the 2nd best elo, riser gets

1 game divided by the 2nd best elo

1/2 = .50

etc.

So back to the original scenario. When you played your last game, you finished with the 2390th best elo.

you gained 1 / 2390

*note, your elo was 1582, but COMPARED TO OTHERS it was the 2390th best)

so you gained 1 / 2390 = a small fraction

my last game ended at 1912 in elo

it was the 89th best elo at the time compared to others.

I gained 1/89 = 0.01 (more or less)

those small amounts get added to your rank (0.00) They permanently add to it. The way the top 25 works is that whoever gets more rank passes someone else

But as you can see, gaining rank is super slow with a low elo. But if you can get to 2100s or to the #1 spot in elo (check the news link to see the top 5) then you can start gaining a LOT to your rank

then you can climb bigtime

lemme know if that made sense

Here's the official formula and it's listed at the top of the top players link:

Rank is calculated from your score. This is a different value from your rating as it takes into account how many games you are able to maintain a high rating. Your score increases after every game. The formula for the increase is 1/rank_from_rating.

Note that it says, 1 divided by rank FROM rating.

rating = your elo, 1912 for me in this case, 1582 for chris (nice avatar btw :)

rank FROM rating means how does someone rank compared to others due to rating

1912 = 89th compared to others
1582 = 2390th

make sense?

clearly, you can add to your rank (0.00) value by playing a lot, but the best way to do it is get to the highest rating or elo of anyeone in the game

then you gain 1 / 1st elo compared to others

1/1 = 1

you see the point, basically, the fastest way to climb to the top 25 and go up places is to get super high elo (just like with the previous scoring systme)

only difference is, the top 25 is basically going to end up showing who has gotten to the #1 elo more often

(riser is a good example, a day ago no on the top 25, gets to #1 elo now and climbs a TON of places, from 33rd overall to ... I dont know, go check, hehe)

im a lil clearer on this subject although where does amount of games come in2 the equation?

amount of games doesnt really matter, I mean, technically it does, but it doesn't matter too much

The best way to understand the new scoring thing, is to think about the concept. The concept is simple. With the old scoring system being just about rating (elo), someone could go from 2nd or 3rd place to completely off the top 25 with one bad game. The result was that it encouraged people to sit on their high rating and play very seldomly - and when they did, it was usually when they got a bunch of other high elo players so they risked less.

Now the top 25 rewards players for climbing to really high elo (just like before), but now if someone has a bad game due to luck they arent penalized for it, as you can NEVER lose the rank (0.00) that you have earned.

A few days ago kwizatz was first by over 3 points and had a sizeable lead. The only reason I was lucky enough to pass em was because I got to #1 elo then defended it about 6 or 7 times and got a TON of rank all at once.

So playing a lot of games doesnt impact it. Someone can play all day long and they might add 0.02.

Riser, the #1 in elo can play one game and add 1 whole point to his rank value. See the point? The game rewards high elo, simple as that. Top 25 is just a list of who has gotten a really high elo more often.

technically, I could tank down to 1400 elo for the helluvit and still be #1

but the thing is this, everyone else who is in the top 100 of elo will keep adding to their, while I wouldnt

rank = how much ass u kicked in the past and how high your elo was before, etc

high elo = putting yourself in position to ADD significantly to your rank

so when u click the news, those top 5 players are where the points are at (to be gained) for rank

cuz they get 1 point, .5 points, ,.33 points ,.25points ,.2points

for finishing 1st best, 2nd best

1/1, 1/2 is .5 1/3 is .33

“technically, I could tank down to 1400 elo for the helluvit and still be #1

this is the part where the new scoring system makes no sense at all

“but the thing is this, everyone else who is in the top 100 of elo will keep adding to their, while I wouldn’t

it means that it would take a new player FOREVER to crack to top 25. it also means that those who have played and won a lot of games since the score reset would probably stay in the top 25 like for a loooooooooooong time

having a top 25 list is certainly one incentive for people to come here and play. but what good is it if you can never make it?

...I thought this post was to clarify this =/

Example:

Riser was 33rd place... Not on the top 25 yesterday.

Riser is what? Go check the top 25.

You can climb a TON if you get to #1 elo. Cuz then you are adding 1 to your rank every game... even games you lose points or get +0 (so long as u stay above #2 in elo)

and the tanking thing was just an extreme, and I was making a joke.

In general though, look at the top 25. Most players hover around the top 200 places (the parenthesis by their rating)

Most of the top 25 are great players who hover in the 1800s to 2100s and occassionally string some wins together to climb to #1 elo.

simple as that.

I'm probably going to reset the score at the end of the month and award the top 100 players like in gpokr.

The ratings will not be reset. So, those that start the new month with a high rating will initially be in the lead.

Thoughts?

“You can climb a TON if you get to #1 elo

i totally understand how this works. What I am saying is it’s difficult to achieve high elo, much less #1

how much has the top 25 players’ rank change since the reset? my bet is not much and that’s exactly my point.

i understand that when you are at the top, it’s not easy to give it up…..but unfair is unfair

Palleon (25th rank) has a 5.53, say another player, with 1574 (2585th and 0.02), so 1/2585 = 0.00038. so, for this person to crack to top 25, he/she has to play approximately 14552 games (assuming the ranking don’t change). how is this fair to new comers?

and talk about ryan making changes that would enhance the goal(s) of the game, having a more fair system will make the game more fun, more incentive to play, attract more people, and less complaint. isn’t that nice to achieve all these with one a more fair scoring system/more fair top 25 ranking system?

You know a system is bad when there are too many questions/complaints……..

“The ratings will not be reset. So, those that start the new month with a high rating will initially be in the lead.

Does it mean that the score (1650, 1550, whatever) will be reset but not the 0.04, 0.18 number? If ranking is based on that decimal number, then the same players will be the top 25 AGAIN month after month……..sorry I am confused.
