Thoughts on monthly competition...

Grun had an idea about using a system to measure the frequency which you hit high ranks.

I'm think that I will use something like this for monthly competitions. Ratings will stay from month to month but the second measurement, measuring the number of games you've been in a high position will be rewarded at the end of the month.

There are several positive reasons to do this and they are outlined in gruns idea.

The only negative i see from this at this point is that it introduces a second ranking/score system. This can be confusing. Which do I report at the table etc.

Any thoughts on how to streamline this so that its clear and simple to understand?

I'm not against monthly competition, but this discussion doesn't really seem to be about it at all. We already have a system determining the best players, so I fail to see why there is a need for a new one.

ELO system works great and is a proven system. The great thing about it is that you can be a new player and still reach the top within a few days if you win.

Having a "staying on top" secondary ranking only challenges the current system. You have to ask yourself this question: "Is the ranking system good enough?"

Personally, I know it is good enough. If it's good enough for professional chest, it's good enough. The problem with ELO system in a luck based game is that you might lose due to back luck, while in a 100% skill-based game, it's always accurate.

Kdice is like poker. Lots of luck. But luck averages out over the long run, and while people think otherwise, it's the same for everyone. But, in the end, just like poker, it's the good players that win. I am playing the exact same people in the 1700 tables right now that I was playing at the 1900 tables under the old ratings. Why? Because they're better players. I went down to 1300s, (in my opinion due to bad luck), but I went up in the 1800s and now I'm stucked around 1750. Why? Because that's what I'm worth at this game. If I get lucky, I'll go up in the 1800s, if I'm not, I'll go down in the 1600s, but in the end, I'm always back at 1750. (Until inflation - ranks would be more accurate)

So, you've stated in the top 10 for 2 weeks playing 5 games a day. So what? Now your rate is 1734, so be it.

Ryan, with all due respect, if you don't believe that a player is worth his rating, then you do not have faith in your ranking system and must change it. Not add another.
