AS Counter

Alright, this is the last time I’m going to bring this up, I swear.
Back in the days when the dominance system was still being tested in the sandbox, for a few days Ryan tested out a neat feature: the average size counter. The AS counter was a number next to each player’s name that showed the current average number of territories held by that player, which is the main factor in determining the dominance adjustment. Ryan eventually decided that the AS counter was too distracting, people were focusing exclusively on their AS and forgetting about other important things like the number of dice in their stacks, and strategic positions. When the new scoring system was actually put into place, many players overreacted and become ridiculously aggressive even without the AS counter, so Ryan decided that it was best not to have it. The AS counter isn’t really necessary, and it probably would be more of a distraction than an asset on the lower tables, but I would like to see it make a comeback on the mid and high tables. Although I only played a couple games with it, I think it would come in handy for making decisions while jockeying for the middle places and take away some of the guesswork in the dominance system. Players that have made it to the 1700’s can probably handle the switch without all hell breaking loose. Ryan, since you just reset the ratings and started giving trophies, what better time bring this back than now? |

at 4:39 AM, Tuesday April 3, 2007 EDT Wow, I didn't know there was such a counter. I really support this idea.
Let's at least try to put the couter back for a few days/weeks. If it still ist distracting too much attention, it can still be pulled off. I'd like to see the counter tho, in order to get some insight in how the AS score is calculated exactly. It would help me understand, if I saw what's going on on the board and also see how the AS score in- or decreases. |

But quite often I´m surprised by the dominance - even if it is to high or to low after surredering. And I still don´t know if the dominance rating is interlink to the ELO-rating ( I posted his question after some PHOENIX-games already! ) |

at 5:04 AM, Tuesday April 3, 2007 EDT I think its not a good design decission to try to leave some game meachanics on purpose in darkness.
Some people WILL find them out, they will "misuse" these knowledge either for personal use, or they will make them public. Which again is a problem if the concept was designed in a way that leaving parts in darkness was fundamental for the concept to work.... |
